Day 6: San Luis Obispo, CA -> Monterey, CA

We woke up in SLO around 7 am, we all had a great night sleep in a very cute, comfy Kinney Hotel. Our drive today had a few stops; The Hearst Castle, PCH 1 overlooks, Monastery Beach, and Lone Cypress tree. We had a short 50 minute drive to Hearst Castle where we attended 2 different tours of the absolutely massive estate of William Hearst's (the term castle is not used loosely in this instance,) who was a newspaper and media monopoly in the early 20th century. The entire castle had very unique architecture that can be sourced from a number of different places and does not follow one type of aesthetic , such as the cathedral inspired front entrance and Gothic style arch ways. Then we continued our drive to Monterey by taking the scenic drive of Pacific Coast Highway 1, which if you have not seen before, I think it is well worth the time and effort to experience at least once. Before making it to Monterey we took two more slight detours, first we stopped at Monastery Beach  (photo #) were we just paused for a moment to enjoy the view and the warm beach, then to go on the 17 Mile Scenic Drive (photo 5) to see the Lone Cypress Tree.

Tomorrow we head off to San Francisco, which I am very excited to see! Hopefully we will get to see everything San Fran has to offer, such as The Golden Gate Bridge, Painted Ladies, Alcatraz, and Lombard Street.

  1. The Hearst castle is quite the place for sure! I think they have four tours which gives you an idea of how giagantic the place is. The 17 mile drive is really beautiful as well. Hoping you get to ride the trolly cars in SF! Love your blog!
